WHY STUDY A LANGUAGE?

World Language knowledge:

• increases understanding of English vocabulary and grammar.
• improves reading and writing skills. 
• is proven to increase ACT and SAT scores.

Kansas Seal of Biliteracy Certificates

The Kansas “Seal of Biliteracy” certificate is awarded by the Kansas State Department of Education in conjunction with local school districts to recognize all students who have attained proficiency in English and one or more additional world languages by the time they graduate. In 2019, 406 earned the degree state wide and of those 44 were from SMNW. The recognition for attaining biliteracy is noted on a student’s transcript.  The Seal explicitly addresses the Career and Technical Education foundational skill of communicating “respectfully and effectively with people of different cultures and diverse perspectives.” It is a statement of accomplishment that recognizes a student’s readiness for career and college, and for engagement as a global minded citizen.
